Minority Leader and MP for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, praised the NDC. He called the ruling party a strong and marketable political force.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, he highlighted party identity in Ghanaian politics. He said it often matters more than individual candidates.
“The NDC is a sellable brand,” he stated. “That is what people want. In presidential elections, it’s not about the individual. Look at independent candidates; it’s the party brand that counts.”
He discussed the legacy of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Voters connect with its tradition and achievements.
“People know the NPP tradition—UP, PP, PFP, and now NPP,” he explained. “They recognize ‘Osono’ and remember what Kufuor, Busia, and Akufo-Addo achieved.”
Afenyo-Markin recalled his university days when associating with the NDC was difficult.
“Back then, if you were seen as NDC during elections, your campaign ended,” he said. “Even if you weren’t NPP, you would claim to be.”
He commended the NDC for addressing this image issue through outreach efforts.
“Today, I commend the NDC for recognizing something good in their opponent,” he noted. “They have worked on their image over time. On campuses, students now proudly say they are NDC.”
He mentioned that perceptions of academia leaning toward the NPP have changed.
“We took for granted that academia belonged to us,” he said. “But over time, the NDC has worked hard. Now doctors and professors openly discuss their party affiliation.”
He also pointed out that the NDC improved its presence in the legal profession.
“I once mentioned how many believed every lawyer was NPP,” he recalled. “The NDC recognized this and invested in that area too.”
Afenyo-Markin believes these changes should teach lessons to the opposition NPP.
“In Parliament as opposition members, we must take note,” he urged. “We need to engage youth, professionals, businesses, and students about our ideology and what we can offer them.”
He concluded by urging the NPP to prepare for 2028 elections.
“As part of our rebranding effort as Minority Caucus,” he said, “we must instill confidence in our party.”
“With this foundation laid down," he added," we will prepare for whoever wins our flagbearership to lead us to victory in 2028.”
