NPP condemns ‘state-sponsored persecution’ of members, calls for immediate action

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government. They claim the government is using state security to intimidate NPP members.

In a press release on May 23, the NPP called for an end to these actions. They labeled it a direct attack on Ghana's democracy and rule of law.

On the same day, armed operatives reportedly raided Alfred Ababio Kumi's home. Kumi, known as "Adenta Kumi," was arrested by six masked officers with AK-47 rifles. The NPP described this arrest as "Rambo-style intimidation."

Kumi had recently petitioned President John Dramani Mahama. He asked for the dissolution of a committee investigating Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. The NPP claims his arrest aims to silence him and obstruct justice.

They stated that the government should address concerns through due process, not intimidation. This behavior undermines democratic accountability.

The NPP also expressed concern over Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi. Armed men allegedly stormed his residence despite prior communication with authorities.

Wontumi had informed them he could not attend questioning due to medical reasons but would be available on May 26, 2025. The party called this raid "political harassment."

The NPP urges Ghanaians and civil society organizations to condemn these actions. They see it as an attempt to weaken opposition voices and undermine democracy.

“These actions violate citizens' rights and threaten justice,” they stated. They urged all defenders of democracy to speak out against political persecution.
