NPP has no moral right to criticise CJ removal process – Justice Atuguba

Retired Supreme Court Judge, Justice William Atuguba, has criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He opposes their stance on Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo's suspension. He called the party's position hypocritical and lacking moral authority.

His comments came after a demonstration by the NPP on May 5 in Accra. Protesters demanded the Chief Justice's immediate reinstatement. They argued that President John Dramani Mahama’s decision was unconstitutional and politically motivated. The group claimed this move threatened judicial independence.

In an interview with Joy News, Justice Atuguba questioned the NPP’s credibility regarding judicial independence. He asked how they acted while in office. “Did they perform transparently in the interest of the people?” he said.

He expressed frustration over what he sees as hypocrisy. “The exclusion of public interest in our political space is troubling,” he added. Before elections, social media often referred to the Supreme Court as ‘unanimous FC’. He wondered if President Mahama was responsible for that perception.

Justice Atuguba challenged the NPP about their actions while in power. “What steps did they take?” he asked rhetorically.
