NPP needs a people's choice running mate to win 2028 – Former parliamentary aspirant

Prince Kofi Nyantakyi is a former parliamentary aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Asutifi South, Ahafo region. He is calling for reforms in how vice-presidential candidates are chosen.

Nyantakyi suggests that all NPP flagbearer aspirants should present their running mates to the party. This approval should happen before they can contest in internal primaries.

He believes this approach will align party members with the vice-presidential choices. It could also prevent future discontent that might harm the party’s electoral success.

In an interview with JoyNews, he said, “Candidates often select running mates after winning the flagbearership.” He added that these choices may not reflect what the people want. He insists that if someone wants to run for flagbearer, they must also declare their choice of vice-presidential candidate.

Looking ahead to the 2024 election, Nyantakyi noted dissatisfaction with Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. He stated that over 36% of NPP members disliked this choice, leading to misunderstandings within the party.

He mentioned negative public reactions to some of Opoku Prempeh's comments during the campaign. These remarks, he believes, damaged the party's image and contributed to its defeat.

Nyantakyi is also running for Ahafo Regional Organiser of the NPP. He urges unity among supporters of Kennedy Agyapong and Kwame Baffoe Abronye. “We can’t mend our torn nets with disunity,” he warned.

He highlighted his grassroots leadership style and promised to strengthen the party from polling stations upward if elected. “I understand my peers' aspirations and challenges,” he said.

His leadership aims to revitalize various wings of the party in the region for future success. He believes working together will ensure victory in 2028.

Finally, Nyantakyi called on the Council of Elders and National Executive Council (NEC) to intervene urgently. He wants them to resolve ongoing tensions and promote unity before the next general elections.
