Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere, a political science lecturer at the University of Cape Coast, criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He spoke about the ongoing situation with suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.
In an interview on Accra 100.5 FM on May 5, 2025, Dr. Otchere said the removal process follows the 1992 Constitution. However, he believes the NPP's actions are politicizing what should be a constitutional matter.
He noted that the President has followed due process by submitting three petitions for Torkonoo’s removal. Yet, he is worried that the NPP's stance is damaging public trust in the Judiciary.
Dr. Otchere stated, “The NPP’s actions make this process seem political.” He added that this undermines both the Chief Justice and the integrity of the procedure.
He urged the NPP to allow the constitutional process to proceed without interference. Additionally, he praised the Ghana Police Service for their professionalism during a demonstration by the Minority demanding Torkonoo's reinstatement.
Dr. Otchere emphasized that all petition documents were shared with Chief Justice Torkonoo and reiterated that this issue should not be politicized.
