Former Deputy Minister for Education, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has defended the previous administration’s decision to abolish compulsory Parent Teacher Association (PTA) levies, clarifying that parental involvement in schools was never reduced.
Speaking on Morning Starr, he explained that while PTA levies were made voluntary to ease financial burdens on parents, PTAs themselves remained active.
He noted that under the old system, students could be denied exams due to unpaid levies, a situation the government sought to prevent by covering costs within school budgets.
Rev. Fordjour questioned the government’s intent regarding the reintroduction of PTA levies, urging the public to assess whether parental engagement in schools had truly diminished.
He cited institutions like Wesley Girls and Achimota, emphasizing that their meetings with parents continued as usual despite the levy’s removal.
