NPP rallies other parties to protest against Chief Justice Torkornoo's suspension today

The main opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is protesting today. They are joined by a coalition of political forces. This includes the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), and People’s National Party (PNP).

They are demonstrating against the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. The coalition claims this suspension is a “politically engineered assault” on Ghana's judiciary. They believe it undermines judicial independence and sets a dangerous precedent.

In a joint statement from April 24, the parties condemned the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC). They accused the government of eroding judicial independence. They also described ongoing public sector dismissals as “vindictive.”

“The pattern is undeniable,” they stated. “This is not just about one individual.” They see it as an attempt to control all branches of government, including the judiciary.

The group drew parallels to a controversial incident in 2010. They alleged that there was an NDC-led attempt to remove then-Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood. They argue that this situation poses a broader threat to Ghana’s constitutional order.

The coalition expressed concern over potential political interference. They mentioned alleged plans to remove the Electoral Commission Chairperson and reconstitute the Supreme Court.

According to their statement, these moves aim to reinterpret Article 66(2) of the Constitution. This could allow former President John Dramani Mahama to run for a third term in 2028.

Additionally, they criticized ongoing terminations in public service jobs. The parties labeled these actions as politically motivated purges.
