Clement Opoku Gyamfi is the lawyer for Alfred Ababio Kumi. Kumi is also known as Adenta Kumi. His lawyer stated that Kumi has been charged with publishing false news. This information was confirmed on Asempa FM’s ‘Eko Sii Sen’ program on May 23.
Kumi was arrested by National Investigations Bureau (NIB) operatives on Friday. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) condemned this arrest. They accused the NDC government of intimidating opposition members.
According to his lawyer, Kumi was interrogated by NIB officials while he was present. His arrest relates to comments he made in media interviews and on social media. It also involves a petition he sent to the presidency about a committee investigating Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo's possible removal.
The lawyer confirmed that Kumi's caution statement has been taken. He has submitted a bail application and is waiting for a response from the NIB. The lawyer expects Kumi will be granted bail since this matter is minor.
Kumi's arrest follows his petition to President John Mahama. In it, he called for dissolving a committee looking into the Chief Justice's removal. Kumi, a former NPP parliamentary aspirant in Adentan, alleged misconduct by committee members.
He claimed their actions could compromise the inquiry's credibility. In his petition, Kumi accused Justices Pwamang, Adibu-Asiedu, and Yonni Kulendi of meeting Thaddeus Sory at Santoku Restaurant after a hearing on May 15, 2025.
Kumi claims the judges were overheard discussing issues related to the petition during dinner. A video of this alleged meeting has gone viral online, raising questions about its credibility.
