Professor Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua, a senior law lecturer at the University of Ghana, criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He called their protest over bail conditions for Mr. Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, unnecessary.
During a weekend news analysis on Channel One TV, he expressed his disapproval. He accused the NPP of abandoning legal procedures for “extralegal theatrics.”
“The NPP’s actions were dramatic and led to lawlessness,” he stated. Mr. Antwi-Boasiako was granted bail with a GH¢50 million condition by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). The NPP has challenged these terms as excessive.
However, Professor Appiagyei-Atua disagreed. He said the bail amount is reasonable given the allegations. “EOCO acted within their authority,” he explained.
He suggested that if the bail terms seem too strict, Mr. Antwi-Boasiako's lawyers should apply to the High Court for a change. He criticized NPP members in Parliament for choosing political spectacle over legal remedies.
“Many MPs are lawyers familiar with legal procedures,” he noted. “Their choice suggests an intention to politicize this matter.”
Professor Appiagyei-Atua observed that the NPP appears to struggle with its new opposition role. They may be trying to reassure their supporters by standing by Mr. Antwi-Boasiako.
“They should balance legal and political strategies instead of letting things spiral,” he advised.
In conclusion, he emphasized respect for the rule of law regardless of political affiliation. “The law applies to everyone equally,” he stated firmly.
