NPP vows to resist “political intimidation” after Wontumi arrest

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a warning. They describe recent events as politically motivated intimidation. This follows the arrest of their Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi. He was arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Tuesday, May 27.

NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye spoke on Citi Eyewitness News. He expressed the party's outrage over the incident. Boakye vowed that the NPP would not tolerate unfair treatment of its members. He stated they would resist any form of political harassment.

Boakye emphasized that the NPP is a law-abiding party. They have instructed their members to cooperate with investigations. He criticized how the arrest was conducted, comparing it to an action film.

Chairman Wontumi was picked up after visiting the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). This occurred on the morning of May 27. Sources say he was assisting with ongoing investigations at that time. He was then transferred into EOCO custody for further questioning.

EOCO has not disclosed details about the case yet. However, Wontumi was cautioned on Monday, May 26, regarding illegal mining activities. Allegations include operating without a license and polluting water bodies. There are also claims of unlawfully entering a forest reserve.
