NPP will have advantage in 2028 because NDC will field a first-time candidate - Bawumia

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is a 2024 presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He believes the NPP has a strong chance to return to power in 2028. He pointed out that Ghana’s political history often favors established candidates over newcomers.

Dr. Bawumia spoke to members of the NPP’s UK branch in London. He noted that opposition parties usually have an advantage when the ruling party fields a new candidate after two terms.

“Our history shows it is tough for first-time candidates to win,” he said. “In 2028, the NDC will likely introduce a new candidate. We should have an edge over them.”

He also mentioned that he expects the NDC will struggle to fulfill its campaign promises before the 2024 elections. “They made many promises about reducing living costs, but prices are rising,” he remarked.

Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the NPP's poor performance in the 2024 elections and took responsibility for it. “We did a lot of work, but we didn’t get everything right,” he admitted. “I apologize on behalf of the party for not achieving better results.”

Despite this setback, Dr. Bawumia remains hopeful about the party's future. “If given another chance, we will improve because we’ve learned valuable lessons,” he stated.

The NPP faced significant defeat in 2024, with John Mahama from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) winning 56.55% of votes compared to Dr. Bawumia’s 41.61%. The party also lost several parliamentary seats.

A committee led by former Speaker Professor Mike Oquaye has submitted a report on their defeat's causes, but party leaders say they won’t disclose its findings publicly.

Still, Dr. Bawumia insists that the NPP is taking these lessons seriously and preparing for a stronger comeback in future elections.
