Nana Addo’s recklessness brought this suspension onto Chief Justice-NDC

Mr. Benjamin Kofi Quashie is the Chairman of the Council of Elders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in South Africa. He blames former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo's suspension.

Quashie called Akufo-Addo's actions reckless. He believes they created the current judicial crisis. He noted that Justice Baffoe-Bonney was unfairly overlooked for Justice Torkornoo. This, he claims, compromised the integrity of judicial appointments.

“The Chief Justice brought this upon herself,” he said. “If I were her, I would have resigned long ago.”

Quashie alleged that judicial independence suffered during Akufo-Addo’s presidency. He suggested political interference made court decisions predictable at times. He mentioned May 9, 2025, when four High Court judges were dismissed. Key officials like Charlotte Osei and Daniel Domelevo were also removed.

“Not a single voice protested these sackings,” he lamented. “Now those who stayed silent are upset about President Mahama’s decision to suspend the Chief Justice.”

He described this reaction as hypocritical. Quashie insisted that President Mahama has done nothing wrong and is upholding the Constitution.

He criticized Akufo-Addo’s legacy, saying he ran state institutions into the ground despite being a skilled lawyer.

In conclusion, Quashie defended President Mahama’s leadership. He stated that the Chief Justice's suspension was constitutionally justified and followed due process. Quashie's comments came during an interview on Accra-based Kessben FM.
