NexGen Deutsche-Afrik has praised President John Dramani Mahama. He established Ghana’s first Ministry of Climate Change and Sustainability.
The organization urges the government to empower the minister effectively. This includes a clear mandate, dedicated budget, and inter-ministerial coordination. These steps will help with policy formulation and implementation.
In a statement by Executive Director Simeon Mede, NexGen emphasized funding needs. Adequate funding is crucial for green infrastructure and energy projects. The government can position Ghana as Africa’s ‘Green Hub’ through strong policies.
The statement also highlighted climate change's severe impacts on emerging economies like Ghana. It referenced World Bank data showing over 130 million people could face extreme poverty due to climate inaction. Developing countries will be disproportionately affected.
“In Ghana, agriculture, water resources, energy, and health are vulnerable,” the statement noted. Erratic rainfall and rising temperatures threaten food security and rural livelihoods. This undermines the government's socioeconomic development efforts.
NexGen Deutsche-Afrik congratulated Minister Issifu Seidu on his new role. They pledged support for policy dialogue, research, and project collaboration. Their goal is to build a climate-resilient and sustainable future.
“Ghana can lead by example in Africa,” they stated. The organization is ready to provide technical expertise and civic engagement for this journey.
