No patient should be denied dialysis care – Dr. Bampoe

Dr. Victor Bampoe, CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), reaffirmed the government's commitment to free dialysis treatment. This is for patients with end-stage renal failure. His comments come amid public concerns about the program's sustainability.

During a media visit to the Ashanti Region, Dr. Bampoe acknowledged challenges facing the initiative. However, he emphasized that these challenges should not stop patient care. "If a patient needs dialysis, they must receive it," he stated.

He urged that any gaps in service should be reported so they can be addressed. Dr. Bampoe also mentioned ongoing efforts to improve health infrastructure across Ghana. This includes plans to increase access to dialysis services nationwide.

Currently, NHIA covers about 95 percent of disease conditions in Ghana. However, there are still gaps in high-cost treatments like childhood cancers. "We are working to ensure dialysis centers are available throughout the country," he added.

The free dialysis support initiative was introduced by the previous administration. It provides life-saving sessions at no cost for eligible patients. This significantly reduces financial strain on families managing chronic kidney disease.
