PPP slams GBA over response on suspension of CJ

The Progressive Peoples Party (PPP) supports the suspension of Ghana's Chief Justice. They believe President John Mahama acted lawfully, following the 1992 Constitution.

In a statement from National Chairman Nana Ofori Owusu, the PPP said the President consulted with the Council of State. This occurred after a prima facie case was established against the Chief Justice.

The party noted that the suspended Chief Justice had a chance to respond to allegations. This shows that the President upheld fairness and rule of law.

“The Constitution is our supreme law, applicable to everyone,” the statement read. The PPP insists no constitutional provisions were breached by the President regarding this matter.

The PPP criticized the Ghana Bar Association (GBA). They called GBA's request to reverse the suspension "perplexing" and harmful to constitutional processes.

“We hoped GBA would support due process,” said the PPP. “Their call for a ‘suspension of the CJ’s suspension’ may undermine due process.”

The party warned that such positions could weaken rule of law. They described it as promoting selective application of laws based on individuals involved.

The PPP compared this situation to the 2018 dismissal of an Electoral Commission Chairperson. They emphasized accountability for all public officials, regardless of their position.

“It is vital that we hold not just the Chief Justice accountable, but also other leaders,” they stated. They referenced Article 146 of the Constitution about removing superior court justices.

Finally, the PPP urged calm among all parties involved. They encouraged everyone to let constitutional processes unfold fully while maintaining high standards for state institutions.
