Parliament can’t review Wontumi’s bail terms, go to court – Ahiafor to Minority

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, has given advice to the Minority. He suggested they seek legal action regarding Chairman Wontumi's detention. Wontumi is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He remains in custody due to allegations of fraud and money laundering.

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) arrested him. The Attorney General’s Department confirmed these allegations. In response, the Minority staged a walkout in Parliament. They also held a sit-down demonstration at EOCO’s headquarters on May 29, 2025.

During the protest, they accused EOCO of unfair treatment and political bias. Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin criticized EOCO's handling of the case. He promised continued resistance until justice is served. He urged the Majority to stand in solidarity with them.

Afenyo-Markin expressed hope for unity among all members of Parliament. He stated that they should demand fairness for Chairman Wontumi together. However, Deputy Speaker Ahiafor advised against this approach. He emphasized that Parliament cannot intervene in EOCO’s bail procedures.

Ahiafor believes this issue should be resolved by the judiciary. He stated that if an institution's decision can be challenged, it should go to court. He stressed that Parliament lacks authority to review such decisions. Ahiafor called for respect for institutional boundaries and due process in this matter.
