The Parliamentary Select Committee on Local Government and Rural Development has pledged support for Zoomlion. Zoomlion is a leading environmental services company in Ghana.
Miss Sawyerr Maame Pokuah Queenstar, the MP for Agona East, announced this during a visit to Zoomlion's IRECOP facility in Ho, Volta Region. She highlighted the need for sustainability in sanitation efforts.
Ms. Sawyerr noted that projects started in 2016 often change by 2020 and beyond. She believes this inconsistency does not help the country. Continuity is essential, regardless of which government is in power.
She stated, "We need continuation no matter what it is or which government is in power." This continuity will help companies like Zoomlion deliver effectively.
The Committee expressed concern about Zoomlion's financial challenges, especially unpaid arrears. Ms. Sawyerr said they would talk to the current government about these issues. She assured that the Committee would advocate for change and support Zoomlion.
Ms. Sawyerr praised Zoomlion's efforts, saying they are impressed with their work despite existing problems. The Committee aims to collaborate with the private sector to improve sanitation management in Ghana.
Sophia Kudzordji, Chief Corporate Communications Officer at Jospong Group, explained the purpose of the visit. It allowed the Committee to see Zoomlion's innovative waste management solutions firsthand.
Kudzordji emphasized that seeing these operations could inform discussions in Parliament. The Committee was particularly impressed by Zoomlion's medical waste treatment plants.
She also highlighted how Zoomlion contributes to job creation and capacity building. About 80% of employees at the Ho facility are from local communities, showcasing their commitment to supporting livelihoods.
