Partisan committee to probe petitions against Chief Justice reflective of Mahama’s ill-intentions – Assafuah

The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Ekow Vincent Assafuah, has concerns. He believes the government committee investigating petitions against the Chief Justice is biased. He thinks it reflects the President's intentions.

In a statement on April 22, 2025, he pointed out that three of the five members are politically known. He argues they cannot provide an objective assessment of the petitions.

Assafuah stated, “Let’s not feign ignorance. This is a calculated orchestration.” He identified Daniel Yaw Domelevo, Justice Gabriel Pwamang, and Professor James Sefah Dzisah as partisan individuals.

He finds it troubling that the Chief Justice was suspended due to her political beliefs. He questioned what this means for Ghana's future.

“If one government can suspend a chief justice,” he asked, “what will stop future governments from doing worse?” He worries about the precedent being set for future generations.

Assafuah believes this situation is not about accountability but rather vengeance from the president.

“We welcome accountability,” he said. “But when it becomes selective and politically motivated, it ceases to be justice.”

He warned that today it is the Chief Justice; tomorrow it could be others like an Electoral Commissioner or journalist.

He concluded that this is not a pursuit of truth but an attempt to weaken the judiciary and increase executive power.
