Police arrest 13 illegal miners, destroy over 120 changfangs at Wassa Gyapa

Thirteen suspected illegal miners were arrested on May 19, 2025. This occurred during an anti-galamsey operation by the Western Central Regional Police Command. The operation took place at Wassa Gyapa in the Western Region. Over 120 changfang machines were also destroyed.

The suspects are all men. They were operating without proper authorization. Their activities caused significant damage to water bodies and forest reserves.

Among those arrested are Nana Ampadu, Stephen Tetteh, and Yaw Dalame. Other names include Samuel Amoah, Kwame Oppong, and Francis Oduom. The list continues with Owusu Asare, Atta Kwame, Apiyanga Emmanuel, Kojo Montanakito, Maxwell Owusu, Obofo Vincent, and Soogal Fataw.

Police recovered six motorbikes used for transporting materials and personnel to the site.

Residents of Wassa Gyapa report that illegal mining has harmed water quality. It has also destroyed large areas of farmland.

One farmer expressed concern: “We can’t drink from our rivers anymore.” He added that children often fall sick due to polluted water.

Police sources say this operation is part of ongoing efforts against galamsey activities. These activities have been linked to environmental damage and public health threats.

The suspects appeared in Tarkwa Circuit Court on May 20, 2025. They face charges related to illegal mining and environmental violations.
