Catherine Afeku, former Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, views politics as a strategic game. She believes it can be murky but still allows for dignity and personal values.
In an interview on JoyNews’ Women, Power & Politics programme, Afeku discussed the darker sides of politics. She emphasized that individual choices shape how one navigates these challenges.
“It depends on how murky you want it to be,” she said. “Set your standards and create your own barriers. You allow others to make you feel bad.”
Afeku is known for her strong leadership stance. She referenced her favorite book, Niccolò Machiavelli’s The Prince, to highlight political realities like betrayal.
“There is backstabbing and denigrating everywhere,” she noted. “It happens even in church.”
Despite the challenges in politics, Afeku stressed the importance of resilience and self-awareness. She believes strategy is crucial for overcoming difficulties.
“You must know how to set your boundaries,” she advised. “Be one step ahead of the game. It’s murky, but you can choose to be a hero.”
