President Mahama engages civil society on formation of Governance Advisory Council

President John Dramani Mahama met with Civil Society Organisations on Monday. They discussed the creation of a Governance Advisory Council. This council is part of his campaign promise to improve transparency and accountability in Ghana.

The proposed council will be an independent body. Its role will be to monitor human rights, anti-corruption efforts, and governance performance in Ghana.

During the meeting, President Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to a transparent government. He said this aligns with the values of the Ghanaian people. “This is a key promise from my campaign,” he stated.

He added that the council would act as an independent watchdog. It will focus on monitoring human rights, corruption, and overall governance.

A major task for the Governance Advisory Council will be publishing an annual report. This report will assess governance, focusing on human rights protection and anti-corruption efforts. President Mahama noted this would help ensure public accountability and democratic progress.

He stressed that civil society's involvement is crucial for shaping the council’s structure. Inclusive dialogue is essential for its legitimacy and effectiveness.

The Governance Advisory Council will operate independently from the executive branch. It will include representatives from civil society, academia, legal institutions, human rights groups, and the private sector.
