Put it on a charge sheet, not Facebook – Appiah-Kubi warns deputy AG

The lawyer for Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, has criticized Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem Sai. He claims Srem Sai is conducting a trial by media.

Andy Appiah-Kubi argues that the Deputy AG should not make public statements about his client's legal issues. Instead, he should pursue formal charges in court.

“I wonder why he is out there saying this,” Appiah-Kubi told Movement TV. “It should be on the charge sheet. Bringing someone to the public space to prosecute him isn’t right.”

This reaction comes after Justice Srem-Sai posted on social media. He confirmed that Chairman Wontumi is under investigation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). The investigation includes allegations of fraud, financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

“Suspect BERNARD ANTWI BOASIAKO, a.k.a. Chairman Wontumi, is under investigation for various criminal offences,” wrote the Deputy AG. He added that the case involves international aspects and ties to a larger organized crime scheme with foreign law enforcement.

Appiah-Kubi finds these statements troubling. “As Deputy Attorney General, he should protect citizens' rights,” he said. “He needs to put it on the charge sheet and allow my client to respond before going public.”

Justice Srem-Sai explained that EOCO’s probe targets both criminal activities and assets suspected of being proceeds of crime. He stated that asset recovery processes run alongside criminal investigations.

However, Appiah-Kubi believes such comments undermine due process and presumption of innocence. “He should stop undermining Chairman Wontumi's human rights,” he warned against perceived political motives in handling this case.
