The People’s National Party (PNP) has criticized President John Dramani Mahama over what it describes as an attempt to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo from office, calling it a betrayal of women's trust in his leadership.
In a statement signed by PNP Chairperson Janet Nabla, the party expressed disappointment, arguing that Mahama’s actions contradict his campaign promises to empower women.
The controversy follows three petitions submitted to the president calling for Justice Torkonoo’s removal. Mahama has since indicated his intention to refer the matter to the Council of State for advice.
However, the PNP believes this move undermines his commitment to gender equality, particularly his pledge to implement the Affirmative Action Law and ensure 30% representation of women in government.
“Instead of delivering on his promise, he is actively seeking ways to remove those who were there before his tenure,” the statement read.
The party further accused Mahama of focusing on the Chief Justice and the Electoral Commissioner for political reasons rather than addressing governance challenges.
“His actions suggest that his priority is not governance but manipulating the system to secure victory in the 2028 elections—or worse, to set the stage for his own return after exhausting his two-term limit.”
The PNP urged Mahama to redirect his attention to tackling economic challenges and fulfilling his campaign pledges to Ghanaians.
