Restore justice now; protesters rally against CJ’s suspension

A group of young Ghanaians protested near Independence Square on Thursday, May 22, 2025. They were upset about the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

Their demands were clear: justice, transparency, and a quick reversal of her suspension. They believe this action is politically motivated against Ghana’s judiciary.

The protesters held placards with messages like “Restore the Chief Justice Now” and “Don’t Erode Public Trust.” They expressed frustration over the lack of openness in the process leading to her suspension.

They argued that the proceedings have damaged confidence in the legal system. One protest leader stated, “This is bigger than one individual. It’s about the independence of our judiciary.”

He added, “If there are allegations, let them be addressed publicly and fairly. Not behind closed doors.”

The protest was peaceful but sent a strong message. Demonstrators suggested that the Chief Justice is being targeted for defending judicial autonomy. They described her suspension as part of a broader agenda to weaken key institutions.
