Sammy Darko questions timing of Ofori-Atta’s cancer report

Sammy Darko, a top official at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), has dismissed a medical report from former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta's legal team. He called it a calculated move to influence public opinion, not to aid investigations.

Darko is the Director of Strategy, Research and Communication at the OSP. He expressed doubts about the authenticity and timing of the medical document shared with media outlets like Asaase Radio.

He stated, “If you have this and you won’t show it to the SP but share it with Asaase Radio—fake afterthought.” Darko questioned why the letter was made public when the OSP had not received it officially.

The controversy began with a leaked letter from Mayo Clinic in the U.S. The letter claimed that Ofori-Atta was diagnosed with prostate cancer and would undergo surgery in June 2025.

It stated that he had an MR-guided biopsy in March 2025. The letter indicated that surgical intervention was necessary and scheduled for June with Dr. Paras Shah from Urology.

This document emerged while the OSP investigates Ofori-Atta. The Office recently announced efforts to locate him for possible extradition due to his lack of cooperation during ongoing probes.

Darko’s comments highlight a growing rift between the OSP and Ofori-Atta’s legal team. They argue their client is not fleeing justice but seeking urgent medical care abroad.

They have offered to cooperate virtually with the OSP during his treatment period. However, the OSP remains skeptical, viewing this as a public relations tactic rather than genuine transparency.

The next court hearing is set for June 18, 2025. Both sides will be closely watched as they proceed, especially regarding how this report impacts future legal processes.
