Shamima Muslim, the Deputy Presidential Spokesperson, supports President John Dramani Mahama's decision. He suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. Muslim believes this action aligns with Ghana’s constitutional framework.
In an interview on Adwenekasa, a political show on Original TV, she explained the suspension. It is based on a thorough examination of a prima facie case. This case comes from three petitions calling for the Chief Justice’s removal.
Muslim noted that the suspension follows Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution. It was taken after consulting with the Council of State. This step could lead to a formal investigation into the allegations.
“There is no conflict between President Mahama’s actions and the Constitution,” Muslim stated. She emphasized that he is upholding the law. The suspension does not imply guilt; it is a procedural action for serious claims.
Muslim's comments come amid public interest in this suspension. Many view it as crucial for judicial accountability in Ghana. A five-member committee will investigate the matter, ensuring a fair process.
She argued that criticism of this decision is misplaced. “Following the Constitution cannot be seen as problematic,” she said. Questioning the President’s adherence to it risks undermining the rule of law.
Her defense highlights Ghana's challenge in balancing judicial independence and accountability for senior officials.
