During the opening of the new parliamentary session, Speaker Alban Bagbin expressed disappointment. He criticized recent misconduct and disorderly behavior among Members of Parliament (MPs).
Bagbin emphasized that such actions harm the dignity of the House. They also undermine its effectiveness.
The Speaker reaffirmed that parliamentary privilege protects Parliament's independence. It does not provide immunity from lawful investigations or criminal proceedings.
He clarified that MPs are not above the law. Privileges do not exempt them from accountability.
Bagbin warned that the House would no longer tolerate disorder or absenteeism. He stated that any misconduct would face appropriate sanctions.
He noted an increase in requests from law enforcement agencies about MPs' conduct. He urged members to respect investigations and legal processes.
His message was clear: “The House is committed to upholding discipline, integrity, and accountability.” He added that they will ensure Members follow rules to restore public trust in the institution.
