Speaker calls for home-grown constitutional reforms

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, has called for constitutional reforms. He made this statement during a meeting with the Constitutional Review Committee. This engagement is part of their nationwide consultations.

Speaker Bagbin urged the Committee to focus on Ghana’s unique context. He warned against adopting foreign governance models blindly. Such systems can complicate local political dynamics instead of solving them.

“Our Constitution must evolve to serve Ghana’s interests,” he said. It should reflect our values and not just replicate unsuitable systems.

He also advocated for reforms in the electoral and parliamentary systems. One recommendation was to shift toward proportional representation. This change would allow more diverse voices in Parliament, including youth and women.

Speaker Bagbin emphasized the need to regulate political party financing. He described this as essential for transparency and democratic integrity.

Additionally, he called for strengthening institutions like the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE). He believes they play a vital role in enhancing civic awareness and participatory governance.

Prof H. Kwasi Prempeh, Chairman of the Constitutional Review Committee, appreciated the Speaker's contributions. He acknowledged that reforming the Constitution is complex. He assured that the committee would carefully consider all proposals from Speaker Bagbin.
