Private lawyer Martin Kpebu has called on Ghanaians to support the new GH₵1 per litre fuel levy. He believes it is necessary to tackle Ghana’s energy sector debt crisis.
Kpebu emphasized the need for government transparency and accountability. He stated, “This is a levy we must fully support.” However, he insisted that funds should be used as intended.
His remarks come amid public outcry and parliamentary dissent over the levy’s passage. The Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Bill, 2025 was passed quickly, bypassing normal procedures.
The Minority in Parliament accused the government of rushing the bill without proper consultation. Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh criticized this as a procedural breach.
He noted that the business was introduced via an addendum paper. He said leadership was not informed about this change.
Despite political pushback and public concern, Kpebu stressed the urgent need to address the $3 billion debt burden. He warned that mismanagement of funds could damage public trust and make the policy ineffective.
