Supreme Court dismisses Kuranchie’s review application for liberty to sue OSP

Supreme Court of Ghana Supreme Court of Ghana

Kenneth Kwabena Agyei Kuranchie, Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Searchlight newspaper, has failed in his attempt to have the Supreme Court review its earlier decision regarding his suit challenging the constitutionality of the Office of Special Prosecutor (OSP).

On December 11, 2024, a nine-member review panel of the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, dismissed his application.

Kuranchie had sought to have the OSP declared unconstitutional but withdrew his case in July 2024 without filing a required statement of case, leading to its dismissal.

His motion for review, arguing that the original decision was unconstitutional and led to a miscarriage of justice, was rejected.

The full reasons for the Court's decision will be given on December 20. Kuranchie sought to annul the Special Prosecutor Act, 2017, which he believes violates the 1992 Constitution.
