The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) supports the Supreme Court's ruling. This ruling dismissed objections against the Acting Chief Justice. The objections were related to an injunction filed by Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the Old Tafo MP. This injunction was against the removal processes of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
In a statement to Metro TV, the PPP expressed its commitment to the 1992 Constitution. They emphasized judicial independence and institutional integrity. Nana Ofori Owusu, National Chairman of the PPP, stated that Article 144(6) is clear. It gives power to the most senior judge when the Chief Justice cannot perform duties.
This provision ensures justice is administered smoothly and without political influence. The PPP praised the Supreme Court for upholding constitutional order. They believe this prevents any attempts to weaken public confidence in the judiciary.
Mr. Owusu urged all stakeholders to respect this judgment. He warned against actions that could undermine the rule of law. The party remains committed to reforms that strengthen democratic institutions and promote transparency.
This news follows President John Dramani Mahama's suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo. He cited a prima facie case as his reason for suspension. According to Article 146(6), a committee must investigate allegations against a superior court judge if such a case exists.
The investigation committee includes members from various sectors:
- Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang – Supreme Court Justice
- Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu – Supreme Court Justice
- Daniel Yaw Domelevo – Former Auditor-General
- Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo – Ghana Armed Forces
- Professor James Sefah Dzisah – Associate Professor, University of Ghana
Following Article 146(10) and advice from the Council of State, President Mahama suspended Torkornoo immediately pending committee proceedings.
