Former Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, has joined the debate about Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo's suspension. He emphasized that the rule of law must be upheld for everyone.
Justice Torkornoo is challenging a closed-door inquiry into three petitions for her removal. She has filed a suit at the Supreme Court for constitutional interpretation and an injunction against the investigative committee.
In an interview with JoyNews’ Blessed Sogah in Abidjan, Dr. Spio-Garbrah stressed equality before the law. He said, “As Chief Justice, she enforced the law. Now it applies to her.” He added that unless she proves the allegations false, the process should continue.
Justice Torkornoo cited emotional distress and procedural issues in her legal challenge. However, Dr. Spio-Garbrah chose not to comment on her personal situation. He noted that everyone copes with adversity differently.
He stated, “We all face challenges—loss, accidents, hardship—and respond differently.” Therefore, he wouldn’t discuss her emotional state further.
Regarding concerns about changing the location of a disciplinary hearing, Dr. Spio-Garbrah said procedural decisions are up to the government. He mentioned that Justice Torkornoo expected one venue but was assigned another by the government.
On whether she should resign, he said it’s a personal decision influenced by various factors. He pointed out that top officials like her retire on full salaries, making it less critical to stay in office.
“If you get your full salary after retirement, why fight to remain?” he asked. He suggested there might be other privileges she wants to keep.
Dr. Spio-Garbrah concluded by saying he wouldn’t judge Justice Torkornoo’s decisions. However, public officials must consider their actions carefully due to their impact on governance and public trust.
