Suspension of Chief Justice unfortunate – Kwabena Agyepong

Kwabena Agyepong, a former NPP flagbearer aspirant, has criticized President John Mahama. He condemned the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as unnecessary and politically motivated.

The Chief Justice was suspended on April 22. This followed three petitions from Daniel Ofori, Ayamga Akolgo, and Shining Stars of Ghana. President Mahama acted under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution. He consulted with the Council of State to form a five-member committee for investigation.

The decision has faced widespread backlash. The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has called for the suspension to be revoked.

In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Channel One TV’s Face to Face, Agyepong expressed his concerns. He stated that there is insufficient justification for removing the Chief Justice. “It is very unfortunate,” he said. “Unless there’s something seriously wrong, I haven’t seen that.”

Agyepong also questioned the timing and motives behind the suspension. He suggested it may have been politically premeditated. He warned that this action could undermine confidence in the judiciary and rule of law.

He noted that discussions about this issue began during the 2024 campaign. Addressing NDC lawyers hinted at premeditation and prejudice against Torkornoo. Agyepong concluded by saying Mahama brought unnecessary opprobrium upon himself without valid reasons for her removal.
