Tensions rose at the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipal Assembly. Member of Parliament Frank Annoh-Dompreh was effectively held hostage. This followed a heated confirmation process for the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) nominee.
The chaos began when Annoh-Dompreh tried to act as a polling agent. He faced strong resistance from NDC Regional executives, led by Dr. Mark Oliver Kevor.
Before the voting, reports stated that Annoh-Dompreh planned to block Philibert Fumey Selorm's confirmation. Selorm had previously challenged him in the 2024 parliamentary elections, which ended in court.
As tensions grew inside the assembly hall, clashes erupted between supporters of both sides. The situation remained volatile until the final vote was cast.
After voting, police formed a security cordon around the counting center. Electoral Commission officials tallied the ballots, confirming Selorm with 29 out of 38 votes.
This announcement angered NDC supporters further. They demanded Annoh-Dompreh be released and shouted threats of retaliation. Police quickly intervened and escorted him to the municipal NADMO office under heavy security while angry protesters chased them.
This incident occurred weeks after a Koforidua High Court dismissed an election petition against Annoh-Dompreh’s victory. The case sought to nullify his win but was struck out after a legal application by Gary Nimako Marfo, NPP’s Director of Legal Affairs.
The standoff highlights deepening political divisions in the constituency. It raises concerns about future governance and security in the area.
