Tensions rise as Ayawaso West Assembly rejects Mahama’s MCE nominee

Tempers flared at the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly on April 30, 2025. Members voted against President John Dramani Mahama's nominee for Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Michael Mensah.

In a vote that drew public and political interest, Mensah received only 9 out of 19 votes. He fell short of the two-thirds majority needed for confirmation. The atmosphere in the Assembly Hall was tense, showing sharp divisions among members.

Some members openly voiced their disapproval of the nomination. Verbal clashes reportedly broke out between supporters and opponents of Mensah. This highlighted deeper political disagreements within the assembly.

Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo appealed to assembly members to endorse the nominee. She emphasized that critical regional initiatives are being delayed by this situation. "We have a lot to do," she said, urging members to confirm the president's nominee.

Ocloo warned that if they don't approve, they will face consequences later. With Mensah’s nomination rejected, the MCE position remains vacant for now. The Presidency may renominate or appoint a new candidate soon.
