This is a mockery of justice – Suspended CJ fights back

Suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo is challenging her removal proceedings. She claims the process aims to unfairly force her out, not deliver justice.

In a supplementary affidavit at the Supreme Court, she criticized the Justice Pwamang Committee. She called their work a “mockery of justice.” Torkornoo believes it tarnishes her image and violates her rights. She argues that the treatment she received was inhumane and degrading, breaching her constitutional protections.

One major concern is the hearing location. Unlike previous inquiries at the Judicial Service’s Court Complex, hers is at Osu Castle. This heavily fortified facility feels inappropriate and intimidating to her. She believes it was chosen to create psychological pressure.

Torkornoo also criticized the committee for not outlining legal grounds for charges against her. Without clear criteria, she struggles to understand and defend herself effectively.

She revealed that hearing dates were set without her consent or lawyer's presence. The committee was informed of a pending legal challenge and her lawyer's unavailability on those days.

Another issue is allowing petitioners to present their case through witnesses instead of appearing themselves. Torkornoo sees this as unfair and inconsistent with open justice principles.

Her affidavit details personal intrusions she faced during proceedings. She was denied access to her mobile phone and subjected to invasive body searches. Additionally, she could not have her husband or children present while petitioners’ lawyers enjoyed more freedom.

According to Torkornoo, these experiences have taken a mental toll on her. They signal an attempt to break her resolve through psychological pressure. Her case represents more than just her future; it concerns the integrity of the justice system itself.
