Godfred Dame, the former Attorney General, is defending Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo. He argues that the removal proceedings against her are flawed and unconstitutional.
On May 28, he spoke to journalists outside the Supreme Court in Accra. He stressed the importance of due process and the rule of law in Ghana. His comments came after several legal setbacks for Torkornoo.
The Supreme Court dismissed her injunction application against a committee investigating her removal. Earlier that day, they also struck out her supplementary affidavit. Despite calls for her resignation, Dame stated that this option is not being considered.
He said, “We will not make decisions based on pressure.” He emphasized that upholding the rule of law is crucial. Dame noted that his client seeks adherence to legal norms, not sympathy.
“The proper thing must be done,” he insisted. Torkornoo understands due process and constitutional rights, he added. On May 21, she filed an application at the Supreme Court to restrain a committee set up by President John Mahama.
She sought an injunction to stop all proceedings until the case was resolved. However, on May 28, the Supreme Court unanimously dismissed her request for an injunction.
