The Upper East Region has faced a tragedy. Mahamadu Seidu Akugri, the District Director for the National Health Insurance Authority in Bongo, was shot and set on fire.
A1 Radio from Bolgatanga reported that this incident happened on Monday, May 19. It occurred between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. Mr. Akugri was returning home from Bolgatanga at the time.
The attackers have not been identified yet. They shot him and then burned his vehicle.
Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga condemned the killing of Mr. Akugri. He released a strong statement expressing his outrage.
He said, “I hereby condemn, in no uncertain terms, the shooting, killing and burning of Mahamadu Seidu Akugri… My heartfelt condolences to his family.” He urged law enforcement to investigate quickly and bring those responsible to justice.
Ayariga also called for calm among the public. He referenced ongoing efforts by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to address regional security issues.
As of now, the Police have not issued a statement about the incident. The motive behind the attack remains unclear.
