UG, CIHRM launch Ghana’s first professorial chair in HRM

The University of Ghana and the Chartered Institute of Human Resource Management (CIHRM) have launched Ghana’s first Professorial Chair in Human Resource Management.

The official launch occurred on Tuesday at the RS Amegashie Auditorium. This followed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between both institutions. The initiative aims to connect HR theory with practice. It also seeks to address rising unemployment and improve research in Ghana’s HR sector.

At the launch, CIHRM President Mrs. Florence Hutchful spoke about effective people management. She emphasized its importance for national development. “Ghana’s development depends on a well-trained workforce,” she said. This is crucial for any thriving nation.

Mrs. Hutchful expressed concerns about declining workplace ethics and productivity. She referenced recent comments by the President regarding employee misconduct. “Such behavior reflects deeper issues with our national HR values,” she noted. She called for a shift that prioritizes skills and ethics.

The Professorial Chair will conduct research to inform HR policies across sectors. Mrs. Ellen Hagan, CEO of L’aine Services, highlighted the initiative's strategic importance. “This is not a ceremonial role,” she stated, emphasizing its dedication to Human Resource Management.

She added that this shows how seriously we are taking people management in Ghana. “For years, I’ve seen talented individuals frustrated by poor leadership,” she said. The Chair aims to correct these issues.

Dr. Francis Eduku, CEO of CIHRM, praised the partnership as transformative for HR professionals. He stated that research is essential for progress in this field. The Chair will be led by someone capable of innovating within Ghana’s HR landscape.

Dr. Eduku also called for financial support for the initiative's sustainability over five years. “Everyone must contribute to make it successful,” he urged.
