The University of Ghana chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG-UG) plans to petition the Presidency. They want Auditor-General Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu removed if he does not resign voluntarily.
This decision comes after a payroll verification audit was released. The audit claims the University overstated employee compensation by GH¢59.2 million from 2022 to 2024. UTAG-UG has rejected these findings, calling the report misleading and damaging.
They argue that the university was not given a chance to clarify any discrepancies. On Citi Eyewitness News, UTAG-UG Secretary Dr. Jerry Joe Harrison criticized the Auditor-General's actions. He called them unethical and unbefitting for someone in such a high office.
Dr. Harrison emphasized the importance of ethics over mere morality. He stated that developed countries thrive on strong ethical principles, not just moral upbringing. He questioned whether the Auditor-General reviewed the report before its release.
He suggested this issue reflects broader problems within the Audit Service. Dr. Harrison warned that if Asiedu remains in office, they will proceed with their petition for his removal.
UTAG-UG believes the audit report has unfairly damaged the university's reputation and its staff's credibility. The association is committed to holding those responsible accountable and restoring public trust in state institutions.
