VRA kicks off annual sensitisation workshop in Eastern region

The Water Resources and Renewable Energy Director of the Volta River Authority (VRA), Abdul Noor Wahab, and Environment and Sustainable Development Director, Benjamin Arhin Sackey, led a team to engage stakeholders. They discussed the Authority’s Emergency Preparedness Plan (EPP) and Environmental Management Plan (EMP) at the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council in Koforidua.

Attendees included Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, Municipal/District Chief Executives from affected communities, NADMO officials, and security personnel. The workshop aimed to inform communities about the Akosombo and Kpong hydroelectric dams. It also focused on ensuring safety during potential emergencies like dam collapses or controlled water releases.

The workshop sought to raise awareness about sustainable environmental practices. These practices aim to protect the Volta Lake and ensure reliable power generation for economic growth.

Abdul Noor Wahab emphasized that this workshop serves as a refresher on stakeholder roles during emergencies. He noted that releasing water from the dam can significantly impact surrounding communities and the environment. It is crucial for all stakeholders to understand their responsibilities in such situations.

Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey praised VRA for this initiative. She stressed that the EPP is essential for preparing stakeholders for emergencies. She encouraged everyone to view the workshop as a reminder of their collective responsibility to protect communities along the Volta Lake.

Benjamin Sackey led discussions on the EMP after a detailed presentation. He allowed participants to ask questions and share insights. Together with his team, he addressed concerns about reforestation, alternative livelihoods, and gorge protection programs.

The VRA pledged to continue collaborating with all stakeholders for public safety and sustainable energy operations. Sensitization workshops will also take place in Kwahu South, Afram Plains South, Upper Manya Krobo, Asuogyaman, and Lower Manya Krobo Municipal/District Assemblies.
