We came to see Wontumi, but they said no – Bawumia opens up

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin tried to visit NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, on Thursday. They went to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in Accra.

Chairman Wontumi was picked up by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). He is currently in NIB custody while investigations continue into his conduct.

Dr. Bawumia spoke to the press about their visit. He said they had made arrangements to see Wontumi. However, officials told them he could not be brought out due to the crowd size.

Bawumia explained, “We heard that Wontumi was arrested and held by EOCO. We wanted to see him and check on him.”

He added that NIB and EOCO felt it was unsafe to bring Wontumi out at that time.

Bawumia expressed disappointment over not being able to see him. He emphasized that this visit was pre-arranged and they were unhappy with the outcome.
