We have to go away from ‘I stand with, I stand with’ mindset — Alamzy on Wontumi’s arrest

Political tensions are rising after the arrest of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi. In response, Niyema Billa Alamzy, MP for Chiana-Paga, made a strong appeal. He urged Ghana to move beyond blind political loyalty.

Speaking on Morning Starr’s Weekly Review with Naa Dedei Tettey, Alamzy criticized the culture of partisan solidarity. He said it often overshadows facts and due process. “We have to go away from ‘I stand with’ and understand why we are picking some people,” he urged.

His comments come amid debates about law enforcement agencies like EOCO. The opposition NPP has accused these agencies of political persecution. Recently, the slogan “I stand with Wontumi” has trended online. Many party officials and supporters have protested his treatment.

Alamzy believes these reactions distract from the real issues. “We are not witch-hunting anybody… we are trying to reset,” he stated. He emphasized that government actions aim to strengthen accountability, not settle political scores.

He noted that anyone feeling wronged by investigations can seek justice legally. “If you feel you’re being treated unfairly, you can go to court,” he explained. Emotional protests cannot replace lawful processes.

Alamzy also criticized the large crowds that gathered in Kumasi and Accra in support of Wontumi's arrest. He questioned the need for such displays of solidarity: “Why this mistreatment? Is that what we call democracy?”

He urged citizens to respect state institutions and allow them to function properly.
