We must stop buying fresh cruisers for ministers – Dr. Asah Asante

Political Scientist Dr. Kwame Asah Asante has welcomed the new Code of Conduct for political appointees. President John Dramani Mahama launched this code to improve accountability in public service.

Dr. Asante believes the code should address the misuse of state resources, especially official vehicles. He spoke on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey about this issue.

He praised the regulation on ministerial travel. This will help reduce unnecessary spending and control public officials' movements.

“Ministerial travel regulation is good,” he said. “It will prevent officials from leaving the country without permission.”

He noted that government spends a lot on travel, so this regulation is important.

While acknowledging progress, Dr. Asante emphasized tackling inefficiencies in managing government vehicles. He wants an end to the abuse of state cars for personal errands and social events.

“I would have loved to see measures against vehicle abuse,” he stated. “Using state cars for markets or funerals should stop.”

Dr. Asante also called for a change in purchasing practices for new vehicles. He criticized buying new cars for every appointee when existing ones are available.

“We need a revolution in this area,” he said. “There are many cars available for use.”

He pointed out that it costs a lot of money to buy new vehicles unnecessarily. Dr. Asante hopes the code will address these issues effectively.
