Edem Agbana, the Member of Parliament for Ketu North, supports the government's GHC1 fuel levy. He calls it a necessary step to address Ghana’s energy challenges.
Agbana spoke on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on June 7. He stated that the government’s response is not political. Instead, it is a practical solution to a long-standing financial issue.
“We inherited a challenge,” he said. “Our goal is to solve this problem once and for all.”
He emphasized that inadequate financing is at the root of Ghana’s energy problems. “The challenge in the energy sector is fundamentally financial,” he explained.
The new levy aims to generate about GHC5.7 billion each year. Although he acknowledged this may not fully resolve the issues, he assured Ghanaians it is part of a larger plan.
“With this levy, we project to raise 5.7 billion annually,” Agbana noted. “It may not be enough, but we have other measures in place.”
The GHC1 Fuel Levy was announced in May 2025. It has received mixed reactions from citizens and industry players. Critics see it as an extra burden on consumers.
However, Agbana believes this move will help fix the sector effectively.
