Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, the Minister-Designate for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, has advocated for a review of Ghana’s retirement age, which currently stands at 60 years.
Speaking during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 30, he stressed that any adjustments should align with the country’s economic capacity and workforce needs.
Dr. Pelpuo acknowledged ongoing discussions about extending the retirement age to 65 or even 70, arguing that many retirees remain physically capable of contributing to the workforce.
However, he emphasized that such a policy shift should be based on broad national consensus and thorough deliberation to ensure its feasibility and sustainability.
