“We were told to approve the 1992 Constitution despite its defects” - Kwesi Pratt Jnr.

Veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt Jnr. shared insights on Ghana’s 1992 Constitution. He described it as flawed and created for political reasons.

On Good Morning Ghana, hosted by Moro Awudu, Pratt explained the opposition's concerns. Key figures, including himself, opposed the constitution's draft. They believed it was weak and favored the ruling Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC).

Pratt stated, “It wasn’t a gift from the NDC.” The constitution was drafted between 1991 and 1992. During this time, the Ghana Bar Association boycotted the process. It was mainly written by those aligned with the PNDC.

Despite its flaws, influential leaders like Professor Adu Boahen urged support for the constitution. Pratt recalled their argument: “If we don’t approve this constitution, the PNDC will stay in power longer.” They encouraged people to vote yes and later reform it through elections.

Not everyone agreed with this approach. Pratt and others advocated for a transitional government first. They wanted to revise the draft before elections took place.

Ultimately, most chose Boahen’s strategy in hopes of winning elections later. Unfortunately, they did not win and claimed the election was unfair. Pratt noted that they ignored earlier warnings about constitutional defects.

“After the election, they complained about fairness,” he said. “But by then, the damage was done.” He emphasized that since 1992, no amendments have been made to address these issues.
