Where is the principle? Egyapa Mercer slams critics over CJ suspension

Former MP for Sekondi, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, criticized critics of the ruling NPP. He called their stance on removing high-ranking officials hypocritical.

On Joy News’ PM Express, Mercer compared the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to the dismissal of former Electoral Commission Chairperson Charlotte Osei. He expressed concern about selective outrage and inconsistent judgments.

Mercer noted that some say, “You did it to Charlotte Osei.” He reminded viewers of the infighting at the Electoral Commission that led to her removal.

He questioned how those who opposed Osei’s removal justify Torkornoo's suspension. “Where is the principle?” he asked.

Mercer argued that if a process was deemed unfair before, leaders should avoid repeating it.

“If they believed Charlotte Osei’s removal was wrongful, they should govern differently,” he said.

He warned that political double standards damage public trust. He questioned Ghana’s democratic future if this continues.

“If your only defense is ‘the NPP did it,’ where are we headed?” he asked.

Mercer emphasized the need for honesty and consistency in politics. “If there’s a path we want to take as a country, let’s be honest about it,” he concluded.
