Collins Adomako-Mensah is the MP for Afigya Kwabre North. He is also a former Deputy Minister for Energy. He strongly disapproves of the new fuel levy introduced by the NDC-led government.
Adomako-Mensah accused the NDC of breaking its campaign promises. He spoke on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana program with host Moro Awudu. He questioned why the NDC, which opposed tax increases during the 2024 election, has now introduced this fuel levy.
“During the campaign, the NDC was against raising taxes,” he said. “So, after winning power, why are they now bringing in this fuel levy?”
The MP alleged that the NDC used taxes like the E-Levy as political tools to win votes. Now that they are in power, they have reversed their stance. He warned that this new fuel levy will severely impact Ghanaians financially.
“The Finance Minister is not being truthful,” he stated. “What he said in opposition is different from what he says in government.”
He noted that after abolishing the E-Levy and betting taxes, they seek other revenue sources. The E-Levy generated GH₵2.1 billion in 2024. In contrast, the new fuel levy is expected to raise GH₵5.4 billion—more than double.
Adomako-Mensah's comments highlight ongoing political tensions over fiscal policies. This comes amid public concerns about rising living costs and inflation.
