Why will the bar get involved in this legal quagmire? – Edudzi Tameklo questions GBA’s motive

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly criticized the Ghana Bar Association (GBA). This follows the GBA's call for President John Dramani Mahama to lift Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo's suspension. The NDC accused the GBA of engaging in political theatrics.

Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, acting CEO of the National Petroleum Authority and NDC’s Director of Legal Affairs, spoke out against the GBA. He stated that the bar is on a "wayward path." He emphasized that the President acted within legal boundaries.

Tameklo questioned why the GBA would involve itself in this legal matter. The GBA had publicly condemned the Chief Justice's suspension. They described it as troubling and potentially unconstitutional, raising concerns about judicial independence.

The presidency and its supporters quickly responded to the GBA's statement. Joyce Bawa Mogtari, Special Aide to the President, joined in criticizing the GBA. She accused them of overstepping their bounds and interfering with a constitutional process.

Mogtari asked who invited the Bar to interpret the Constitution. She also questioned whether threats from the Bar could influence a constitutional process.

She argued that the GBA’s actions undermine legal principles they claim to support. Mogtari urged them to take their grievances to proper forums instead of making public threats. She suggested that if they believe their case is strong, they should go to court rather than engage in empty rhetoric.
